Like most people, paying off my mortgage earlier is something I want to do — but without completely changing how I live or stressing about overpayments every month.
That’s why I really like the Sprive app. It’s one of those tools that just quietly works in the background, using money I was already spending anyway.
What Sprive Actually Does
Sprive is a cashback app, and if you’ve ever used TopCashback, the idea will feel very familiar.
You earn cashback when you shop at retailers you already use — both online and in-store, including supermarkets and everyday food shops. That in-store part is a big win for me, because not everything I buy is online.
The big difference is what happens to the cashback.
Instead of turning into vouchers or being withdrawn into your bank account, the cashback is funnelled directly off your mortgage. That means:
- Your mortgage balance reduces
- The interest you pay reduces
- And over time, you chip away at the length of your mortgage
It’s not flashy, but it’s genuinely powerful.
Why I Like It So Much
I’m not spending more. I’m not changing where I shop. I’m just being more intentional — and honestly, it feels reassuring — about how I shop.
Food shops, household bits, and day-to-day purchases are things I have to pay for anyway. Knowing that some of that spending — even when I’m shopping in person — is quietly reducing my mortgage makes it feel like I’m making progress without any extra effort.
It’s basically turning normal life into small, automatic overpayments.
The Refer-a-Friend Bonus Is a Nice Extra
Sprive also has a refer-a-friend scheme, which is a nice bonus.
If someone downloads the app using your referral link, you both get £5 added to your Sprive account. Just like your cashback, that £5 goes straight towards your mortgage.
It’s a small win, but those are exactly the kinds of things that add up over time.
Why I Still Use TopCashback Too
I want to be completely honest: I still use and recommend TopCashback.
Some shops aren’t on Sprive but are available on TopCashback, so in those cases I’ll use TopCashback instead. Sometimes I also prefer having the flexibility of cash or vouchers, depending on what I’m saving for.
For me, it’s not either/or.
This is how I use them:
- If the shop is on Sprive → I’ll usually use Sprive and put the cashback towards my mortgage
- If the shop isn’t on Strive but is on TopCashback → I’ll use TopCashback
That way, I’m always earning something back.
Is Sprive Enough on Its Own?
No — and that’s okay.
Sprive won’t pay off your mortgage overnight, and it’s not a replacement for proper overpayments if you’re able to make them. But as a background strategy, it’s brilliant.
It:
- Costs nothing extra
- Works in-store as well as online
- Takes very little effort once set up
- Adds up slowly, but consistently
And those are the systems that tend to stick.
Final Thoughts
If you like the idea of using everyday spending — online and in-store — to quietly reduce your mortgage, Sprive is well worth a look.
I’ll keep using TopCashback where it makes sense. I’ll keep using Sprive where I can. And I’ll happily let my food shop do a bit more work for me. Sign up to Sprive here

Slow progress is still progress — especially when it’s happening in the background.
